When they settled in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In the fall of 1980, she began attending the University of Texas at Austin. She received a bachelor's degree in theatre that year. Harden was admitted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988, in order to earn her MFA.
